Diglossia is a characteristic of speech communities rather than individuals. The pattern of code or variety choice in Eggenwil is one which has been described with the term diglossia. It used in both in a narrow sense and in a much broader sense. The term diglossia describes societal or institutionalized bilingualism, where two varieties are required to cover all the community’s domains.

Attitudes to H in a diglossia situation are reinforced by the fact that the H variety is the one which it described and “fixed”, or standardized, in grammar books and dictionaries. Attitudes to H in a diglossia situation are varied and ambivalent. L is learned at home and the H variety in school, but some people may use H in the home too. Literature is generally written in H rather than L, but there may be a rich oral literature in L. though H has generally been standardized and codified in grammar books and dictionaries for centuries, L language are also increasingly been codified and standardized too.

Polyglossia is a term that has been used for situation where a community regularly uses more than two languages.
Diglossia has been described as a stable situation. It is possible for two varieties to continue to exist side by side for centuries. Alternatively one variety may gradually displace the other.

Code-switch related to a particular participant or addresses and sometime people switch code within a domain or social situation. A speaker may similarly switch to another language as a signal of group membership and shared ethnicity with an addressee. Even speakers who are not very proficient in a second language may use brief phrases and words for this purpose. People may switch code within a speech event to discuss a particular topic and the topic relates to the function dimension.
Metaphorical switching is a type of switching to represents complex meaning. It also reflects te fact that this kind of switching involves rhetorical skill. Skillful code-switching operates like metaphor to enrich the communication.
Some believe there are very general rule for switching which apply to all switching behavior regardless of the codes or varieties involved. They are searching for universal constraint on switching. Switches only occur within sentence at point where the grammars of both languages match each other.
People are often unaware of the fact that they code switch when their attention is draw to this behavior, however, most tend to apologize for it, condemn it and generally indicate disapproval of mixing language.

A. Teacher-centered and student-centered
I would say that the prime difference between the two education systems is that one uses teacher-centered classes, and the other uses student-centered classes. In the Eastern education system, the teacher is the only authority; his or her words are not to be questioned. Students are not expected to speak up in class or respond to the questions that the teacher asks. Therefore, most of the questions are rather rhetorical. Questions are brought up for the teachers to answer. Thus, there is no motivation for the students to be active. This leads to a very unusually phenomenon, the students sleeping in class.
Students of the Western education system, on the contrary, participate more in class. They have class or group discussions and they are forced to express opinions, which are valued. In this way, students also listen to other’s ideas, which make them not only learn from the teachers, but also their peers.

B. Memorizing and understanding
The way students learn individually (not as members of a class) also differs from East to West. For instance, Eastern education is mainly based on book learning and memorization. They focus on classics and exams. Teachers often have to rush through the textbooks to meet the deadline of every monthly examination. Hence, students learn from memorizing facts, which are often forgotten after a short period of time, rather than understanding. And the lack of understanding all the facts results in the need for cram schools.
However, sometimes students put too much dependence on cram schools and often exhaust themselves, which can easily pull down the efficiency of learning. I noticed that recently teachers tried to train us in the ability to analyze and organize information we receive, but exams put pressure on students to ignore this, since memorizing information is the key to winning points. Somehow the community has formed a rather queer concept that certificates and scores are believed to represent ability. In the end, all we are best at doing is scoring high in exams or getting a diploma. Even our attitude and behavior is graded by numbers. The truth is, however, that most of us show lack of efficiency in solving problems we are confronted, and oftentimes we find difficulties when it comes to organizing activities or our daily routine. We are so competitive but we’re still not in step with the more advanced countries.
If we take a look in the Western way, they have a comparatively relaxed pace of learning. This allows better and deeper understanding of the topic they are working on. They spend more time on class and group discussion in order to know how to speak up logically and learn to accept other people’s opinions. They are often given assignments in the format of a report or project and will have to do their own research and gradually develop their independence. Presentations are also expected to be given properly with a clear voice and information, good time-control and stable eye contact. The skill of taking notes directly from the teacher’s lecture replaces following lifeless textbooks. This is the education of training students to be provided with skills they will need in their further studies and future careers.

C. Conformity and originality
The Eastern education system puts a great deal of emphasis on conformity. There are tons of school rules to follow and students are expected to line up like troops when attending assembly. Rules like: “sneakers and socks have to be white or black”, “shirts need to be tucked in”, and “no makeup or nail polish is allowed” are common. I personally don’t think these issues have anything to do with one’s attitude. All students are basically graded by scores they get in the exams.
The disadvantage of this is that some students might study around the clock but still fail and this would terribly cut down the interest they have towards studies. The Eastern education system seems to be working on producing “perfect”, “zero-mistakes” students. Any action that’s out of the ordinary is regarded as some sort of rebellion and will be questioned or punished. Occupations like doctors and lawyers are regarded as decent jobs to do while being an artist or designer is not so respected by others since in our education system, only those who score low in exams attend vocational schools. This prevents those with special talents from developing into professionals.
Unlike the Eastern system, in the Western education system, mistakes are considered positive. There is no doubt that humans at least once in a while make mistakes, and for Westerners, these are simply steps towards learning and are perfect chances to mature. In contrast to the Eastern grading system, they grade students by assessment of their performance. This way, students who put lots of effort to their studies can be satisfied with the grades they get and will maintain the motivation to keep up the good work and those who don’t work hard also learn that lack of effort is not sufficient to earn a good outcome.
Originality and extracurricular activities are highlighted and encouraged, activities like a donation contest, visiting an orphanage or building houses for the poor. Consequently, they produce more artists and designers that dominate the fashion trends and create a more concerned community.

D. Relationship between teachers and students
Traditionally, the relationship between teachers and students has always been tense between students and teachers in Eastern culture. Teachers are meant to be respected and sometimes students even have to bear teachers’ bad temper. No matter how familiar we are with a teacher, it is not easy for us to automatically talk to them about our concerns. Some don’t even speak freely with their peers.
Students under Western education generally are more willing to speak about their problems to their counselors and are more flexible about other people’s advice. This is also due to the fact that Westerners consider emotional problems as something normal and always try to be optimistic about them. Through lots of discussions and debates in class, teachers have the status of an assistant or guide instead of a director.

Conclusion:
It should be clear from the preceding discussion that there are some definite differences between the two education systems. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Western education encourages people to pursue their true interests, producing a broad range of skills and areas of expertise. Eastern education, on the other hand, discourages the pursuit of learning that has no strictly practical purpose, such as visual and performing arts. Eastern education, however, is an efficient way of training people to perform tasks that require quick and precise thinking.
Confucius is known to be the greatest teacher ever. In schools, we are taught about all the famous lines that he said. Things like “The teacher should teach differently according to every student’s condition” are familiar to all of us, but do we see it inside our education? It’s very ironic that we have the greatest teacher ever but we produce “robot” students. Surely there are some wonderful teachers showing up now and then, but if the whole system doesn’t change, it would be difficult to just rely on this small portion of teachers.
Overall, I would say that the advantages of Western education outweigh its shortcomings. Western education produces people who are able to make choices more consistent with their own true interests. Therefore, they ultimately achieve more satisfying lives. This gives them the motivation to follow their interest with passion which drives them to become leaders in their chosen field. In the East, seniors often tell us to equip ourselves so that we will have the ability to help others after becoming an adult, but the West lets students participate in charity work since childhood or adolescence and this gradually becomes one of their habits. In actual fact, there is so much we can do even if we are only seventeen or eighteen.
In addition to individual consequences, the education system also has an impact at the social level. For example, the two education systems produce different values. Eastern education gives out the concept that working is the main purpose of life. While this creates some social stability, it also means that the spiritual life of each person is easy to impoverish. On the contrary, Westerners know better how to relish life and this world. I believe if we want our society to be more progressive and be in line with the most advanced countries, there is definitely a need to reform our education system.

Privacy is also important to Americans. The notion of individual privacy may make it difficult to make friends. Because Americans respect one's privacy, they may not go much beyond a friendly "hello." Ironically, it is usually the foreigner who must be more assertive if a friendship is to develop.

The rugged individualism valued by most Americans stems from our frontier heritage. For much of our country's history, there was a frontier. That experience greatly influenced American attitudes. Early settlers had to be self-sufficient which forced them to be inventive. Their success gave them an optimism about the future, a belief that problems could be solved. This positive spirit enables Americans to take risks in areas where others might only dream, resulting in tremendous advances in technology, health and science.

The American frontier also created our heroes: the self-reliant, strong-willed, confident individual who preferred action to words and always tried to treat others fairly. Many of these characteristics are represented by the myth of the American cowboy, and the more modern versions personified in movies by John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Sylvester Stallone. We can even look to "future" centuries and admire similar qualities in the heroes of the Star Trek and Star Wars movie series.

In addition to such basic American values as individual freedom, self-reliance, equality of opportunity, hard work, material wealth, and competition, we see a trend toward conservation with an emphasis on recycling and preserving the environment. Also there is a greater sensitivity to cooperation on a more global scale.

No matter what changes the next century brings or whether you agree with American values, the opportunity to visit the United States and to observe Americans first-hand is an experience well worth the effort.

Be careful not to be ethnocentric, but to evaluate a culture by its own standards. Be aware that you'll help shape American attitudes, just as they will influence you.

People in Indonesia commemorate the Kartini day at April 21. It is a beautiful day for the woman because we celebrate the birth of great  lady, RA. Kartini. Everyone knows who kartini is. She is our national  heroine and a great lady with the bright idea.

Sosroningrat, Wedana (assistant of head of regency) in Mayong.  Her mother, MA Ngasirah was a girl from Teluk Awur village in Jepara.  As the daughter of a noble family, she felt luck because she got more  than the ordinary people got . She got better education than other children. She did anything she wants although it was forbidden.

She  passed her childhood with her brother and sister. Because she was very energetic, her father called her "trinil"  Then her father was chosen as Bupati (the head of regency) in Jepara.  She and her family then moved from Mayong to Jepara. In the same year,  Kartini's second sister RA Kardinah was born.

The environment in Jepara  gave her big chance to develop her idea. She could study at the Dutch  owned school where only children from noble family could study here.  Few years after finishing her study, RA. Kartini was willing to  continue her study in higher level. But the custom of that day forbid a  woman to go to school. A tradition of that time, a teenage girl should  be secluded and limited her activity. So was Kartini. She was secluded  inside the house and forbidden to go out until a man propose her. The  rule could restrict her body but not her mind.

During her "pingitan" time, she spent her time by reading book which she got from her  relatives. Although she was not able to continue her study to higher level, she  was smart had a bright idea. She got the knowledge from the books she  read. To express her idea, she established a school for local people on  the backyard of Jepara city hall.
In November 12,1903, she married Adipati Djoyodiningrat, the head of  Rembang regency. According to Javanese tradition Kartini had to follow  her husband. Then she moved to Rembang. In September 13, 1904 she gave a birth to her son. His name was  Singgih. But after giving birth to a son, her condition was getting  worse and she finally passed away on September 17, 1904 on her 25 years  old.

Now Kartini has gone. But her spirit and dream will always be in our  heart. Nowadays Indonesian women progress is influenced by Kartini's  spirit stated on collection of letter "Habis gelap terbitlah terang"  from the dusk to the dawn.

Most Western cultures are future-oriented with a very strong belief that organization, planning and goal achievement are the cornerstones of success.
This is so important to some cultures that people from other cultures perceive them as being obsessive. For example, Americans are often seen as workaholics, placing the importance of success and goal accomplishment over that of personal relationships.

Valuing the future and the improvements Americans are sure the future will bring means that they devalue that past and are, to a large extent, unconscious of the present. Even a happy present goes largely unnoticed because, happy as it may be, Americans have traditionally been hopeful that the future would bring even greater happiness. Almost all energy is directed toward realizing that better future. At best, the present condition is seen as preparatory to a latter and greater event, which will eventually culminate in something even more worthwhile.

Since Americans have been taught (in value 1) to believe that Man, and not Fate, can and should be the one who controls the environment, this has made them very good at planning and executing short-term projects. This ability, in turn, has caused Americans to be invited to all corners of the earth to plan and achieve the miracles that their goal-setting can produce.

If you come from a culture such as those in the traditional Moslem world, where talking about or actively planning the future is felt to be a futile, even sinful, activity, you will have not only philosophical problems with this very American characteristic but religious objections as well. Yet it is something you will have to learn to live with, for all around you Americans will be looking toward the future and what it will bring.
